Satellite Tracking

This is a study undertaken by a PhD student, Amélie Augé, on the Otago Peninsula NZ Sea Lion. Her aim is to have a better understanding of the Sea Lions movements around the area, for example, how far and deep they go to forage for food. She has been out in the field since the 23rd of March, monitoring the movements of the Sea Lions prior to attaching the transmitters. With the help of Department of Conservation staff and a Massey University Wildlife Vet, they have attached a satellite and VHF transmitter onto 4 female Sea Lions. We will be providing updated information of the data collected from these devices.

We now have results from two female Sea Lion foraging trips. Please see maps below:

This is Aurora( 4 years old ) foraging map.

Aurora dives 30 to 50metres to a maximum of 100m. She mainly feeds 16km off shore.

This is Honey (5 years old) foraging map.

Honey dives 80 to 100metres. Her deepest dive is 120m. She travels up to 24km offshore.
