Sea lions are enjoyable to watch, especially when they interact with one another. They are wild animals and are not afraid of people. Due to their size and the fact they carry disease, it is advisable to follow the guidelines when discovering them on the beach to make your experience more enjoyable;
* Keep at least 10 metres away from sea lions.
They can run fast on land.
* If the sea lion starts to approach, move away calmly.
If you run, they may find it more interesting and follow you.
* Sea Lions sleep during the day, do not try to wake them up.
Please respect their right to rest.
* Sea lions carry diseases therefore do not attempt to touch or handle them.
* When driving on the beach keep 50 metres away.

Hi Yosh,
your site is looking good… great to have the links to articles and sea lion trust site. One ongoing issue we have is of people deliberately or inadvertantly feeding sea lions fish offal when cleaning fish on returning to the sheltered waters of Otago Harbour. This practise attracts sea lions to boats, and the result is that people in smaller boats feel intimidated when large sea lions come to investigat if there is any fisf on offer. Can you add ‘ Don’t clean fish around sea lions – hold onto your fishscraps and dispose of them later’ to this list?
Thanks
Jim
